The Impact of Pakhtun Tribal Culture on Socio-Economic Development in Pakistan

Abstract

Pakistan is in list of countries with lower rate of development in last few decades. There are numerous reasons for it whereby Tribal System also is a contributive factor. This study aims to know about the Pakhtun Tribal System and its impact on socio-economic development. This study is framed under qualitative research design specifically interview method. A total of 7 individuals involved in teaching in public sector universities and belonging to Pakhtun tribes were sampled purposively. The collected information has been analyzed thematically. Findings show that Pakhtun tribal system is based on certain norms and values which hinders socio-economic development. These include patriarchy, mixing cultural values with beliefs (leading to extremism and violence) and resistance to change in order to preserve cultural norms and values. However, it has also been found that in recent few years the situation is changing.
